Apple Intelligence Is Coming to China With iOS 27.3
Apple has finally set a timetable for bringing Apple Intelligence to China. According to an announcement on Apple’s Chinese newsroom, reported by The Verge AI via MacRumors, the first features will appear in an iOS 27.3 beta scheduled for November 4. Apple plans to release the full iOS 27.3 update in December.
What arrives first
This is not a complete rollout of Apple Intelligence in China. The new Siri, one of the most prominent parts of Apple’s broader AI strategy, will not be included in the initial release. Instead, Apple is starting with a collection of features that are already familiar from earlier Apple Intelligence deployments:
- Notification summaries for condensing incoming alerts;
- Live translation to assist conversations and communication;
- Rewriting and proofreading tools for text;
- Visual intelligence for interpreting what the user sees;
- Object removal in the Photos app.
The selection suggests that Apple is prioritizing AI tools embedded in everyday system workflows rather than making the new voice assistant the centerpiece of the Chinese launch. It also confirms that the rollout will be incremental, not a single release containing every Apple Intelligence capability.
Local models and Qwen integration
Apple says it has trained a large language model specifically for China. The company also says it has worked with Alibaba to add support for its Qwen chatbot in some Apple Intelligence experiences. The arrangement sounds similar to iOS’s ChatGPT integration, introduced in 2024, where Apple’s system features can draw on an external model when additional assistance is needed.
Apple Intelligence received approval in China in July, an important signal that a local launch was approaching. Reuters later reported in August that Apple had trained its own China-specific LLM. The new beta schedule shows that Apple is now moving from regulatory preparation toward an actual software rollout.
The available information does not specify which iPhone models will support the Chinese release, nor does it provide a complete feature list for the localized service. Those details will need to be confirmed after the beta becomes available. The role and reach of Qwen within the system are also not yet fully explained.
Why the rollout matters
For Chinese users, iOS 27.3 could provide a formal system-level entry point for AI tools that were previously unavailable in the region. Summarizing notifications, polishing text, translating conversations, understanding visual content, and editing photos are all use cases that can fit into existing phone habits without requiring a separate chatbot app.
For Apple, the launch demonstrates the complexity of deploying AI across markets. The company must align its own models, local partners, product design, and regulatory requirements before expanding availability. Starting with a narrower set of established features may reduce that complexity while giving Apple room to evaluate the localized experience.
The biggest unanswered question is the new Siri. Apple has not announced when it will reach China, and it has not provided a schedule for expanding the role of Qwen in Apple Intelligence. For now, iOS 27.3 should be viewed as the first stage of Apple’s China rollout rather than its final form.
