Google AI Mode Adds App Connections as Search Moves Toward Task Execution

Google is pushing AI Mode beyond conversational search and into task completion. According to TechCrunch, the company now lets users link and interact with selected apps directly inside AI Mode. At launch, the supported apps include Instacart, Canva, and YouTube, giving the feature a foothold in shopping, design, and entertainment workflows.

Key points

  • A small but practical launch set: Instacart covers grocery shopping, Canva supports design discovery, and YouTube or YouTube Music connects AI Mode to media and playlists.
  • Planning can turn into action: If a user is planning a barbecue and asks AI Mode to build a grocery list, they can connect Instacart, add the ingredients to a cart, and complete checkout in Instacart’s app or website.
  • Creative work gets fewer handoffs: Users working on a flyer or similar project can ask Canva to surface relevant templates instead of manually moving from search to a design tool.
  • Entertainment workflows are included: Google’s example includes curating a party playlist and saving it directly to YouTube Music.
  • The rollout starts in the U.S.: Google says it is working with more partners and plans to add support for additional apps over time.

Why it matters

The notable shift is not simply that AI Mode can produce more answers. It is that Google wants the product to become an action layer on top of search. Traditional search helps users discover information, compare options, and navigate to websites. With app integrations, Google is trying to compress that journey so that planning, selection, and execution happen in one conversational flow.

That puts AI Mode closer to the broader direction of AI assistants. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude already support app integrations, and the market expectation is moving from “tell me” to “do it with me.” Google’s advantage is its existing ecosystem: Search, YouTube, Gmail, Google Photos, and a long history of capturing user intent at the moment people are ready to act.

The update also fits a pattern of rapid expansion. Earlier this year, Google introduced third-party app connections for the Gemini app. It has also been adding AI Mode features such as checking nearby store availability, browsing the web side by side with AI responses, and using Gmail and Google Photos for more personalized answers. The new app links extend that strategy into everyday tasks like shopping, content creation, and music planning.

Still, app-connected AI raises important product questions. Users need to know when the assistant is merely recommending something and when it is taking an action. Permission flows, account linking, and data sharing across apps must be clear enough to sustain trust. For Google, the long-term value of AI Mode will depend not only on the number of integrations it adds, but also on whether users feel comfortable letting it handle more of their routine digital chores.
