Google turns Search and Gemini into a broader AI study platform

Google is expanding the role of Search and Gemini in education with a set of features aimed at students. The company’s latest update covers visual explanations, custom practice, document organization, research, and interactive simulations. Rather than presenting Gemini as only a question-and-answer assistant, Google is building a broader study workflow around it.

  • Search can generate interactive explanations. A query such as “pH scale” can produce an interactive visual inside an AI Overview. Students can then ask a more specific follow-up, such as plotting citrus fruits on the scale, and AI Mode can create an experience tailored to that request.
  • Custom quizzes are built into Search. Users can ask for practice material across science, math, humanities, foreign languages, and other subjects. A prompt requesting commonly tested vocabulary for SAT preparation, for example, can return an interactive quiz.
  • Lens is gaining guided problem-solving. In the coming weeks, students will be able to use the Lens camera in the Google app to upload a photo of their work. The system is designed to explain the underlying concept, identify possible mistakes, and offer guidance when the student is stuck.
  • Uploaded files can become study documents. Search can use PDFs, documents, slides, and other material to create a condensed study aid. A student could combine handwritten notes with lecture slides and request a one-page outline of the key concepts.
  • Gemini can conduct research in the background. In Gemini Live, a user can start a multi-step research report, leave the conversation, and receive a notification when the work is complete. The report can then be discussed through voice or followed up with additional questions.
  • Interactive 3D responses and a learning hub expand Gemini. Gemini can now generate functional tables, grids, and simulations designed for a prompt, including a rotatable and zoomable 3D DNA model. A dedicated hub brings together study notebooks, flashcards, quizzes, and other learning tools.

Why it matters

The significance of the launch is the way the pieces fit together. Search handles discovery and quick exploration, while Gemini provides a more persistent conversational space for research and review. In principle, a student can move from asking about a difficult concept to visualizing it, practicing it, organizing notes, and discussing the results without switching between several products.

The move also places Google more directly in competition with OpenAI and education-focused services such as Knowt and Gauth. Interactive visuals and guided hints may make abstract subjects easier to explore, but the launch does not establish that these tools improve learning outcomes. Their value will depend on the accuracy of explanations, the quality of feedback, and whether students use them to reason through problems rather than simply obtain answers. Google is releasing a connected set of capabilities, not making a guarantee about educational performance.
