Meta’s Muse Agent Wants to Do More Than Chat. Can Users Trust It?
Introduction
Meta is moving its consumer AI strategy from conversation to execution. The company has introduced Muse, a personal AI agent for users in the U.S. Rather than simply answering questions, Muse is intended to work across the services people use every day. It may send emails, arrange travel, handle forms and bills, create shopping lists from recipe videos, organize invitations and complete purchases.
That broader usefulness comes with a much larger trust requirement. To perform these tasks, Muse can be connected to email, calendars, payment services, shopping, dining, music, events, smart-home systems, health and fitness apps, and other tools. The launch therefore represents more than a new assistant. It is a test of whether Meta can persuade people to hand an AI system access to the infrastructure of their personal lives.

Why it matters
The promise of Muse is convenience across fragmented software. A reliable agent could remove the repetitive work of copying details between apps, filling out forms or tracking routine errands. That is the direction many companies are exploring as AI moves beyond chat interfaces.
The risks are also more consequential. An incorrect answer in a conversation is inconvenient; an incorrect email, booking, form submission or purchase can create real financial or personal harm. Giving an agent broad permissions also makes it harder for users to understand what information is being read, stored or used to make decisions.
Meta says its technical design addresses some of these concerns, but the claims will need scrutiny from security researchers and users. The company’s history is a major part of that evaluation. Past privacy settlements, the Cambridge Analytica scandal, exposed passwords and continuing disputes over youth safety have made trust a central issue for any new Meta data product.
Muse’s customizable name, avatar and communication style may make the assistant feel more personal, but familiarity is not the same as accountability. Adoption will depend on whether Meta offers transparent logs, precise permissions, effective confirmation steps and simple ways to revoke access. Muse has to prove two things at once: that it can reliably complete tasks, and that users remain in control when it makes mistakes.
