Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to up to 60,000 employees

3 min read

Microsoft is expanding a voluntary exit program that could reach up to 60,000 employees in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India. The company is offering financial support and career-planning resources to employees who choose to leave. The arrangement gives Microsoft a way to adjust staffing without immediately announcing another broad round of involuntary layoffs.

Key points

  • A broad potential reach: Microsoft employs roughly 223,000 people, and the new offer could be available to about 60,000 of them across four countries.
  • Several AI groups are included: Sources cited by The Verge say employees in AI Experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources may be eligible.
  • Participation varies by organization: Cloud + AI, Microsoft AI, and corporate, external, and legal affairs are only partially participating. Marketing, commercial business, Discovery and quantum, and security are excluded.
  • It is different from the earlier retirement offer: An earlier program was available to around 9,000 US employees who met a specific age-and-service requirement. The new offer is not based on age, length of service, or performance.

The move follows Microsoft’s reduction of 4,800 jobs several months ago, with Xbox and commercial sales among the areas primarily affected. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has also been reported to be planning additional layoffs. However, the current voluntary exit offer does not target Microsoft’s commercial sales teams, underscoring that the company is using different approaches for different parts of the business.

The inclusion of AI-related organizations is notable, but it should not be read as evidence that Microsoft is abandoning those businesses. The available information does not specify how many employees in each team will leave or how many positions the company hopes to eliminate. Instead, the program suggests that Microsoft wants more flexibility as it shifts resources among AI products, platform work, devices, gaming, and corporate functions.

For employees, a voluntary package can provide a less abrupt alternative to an involuntary layoff, with financial assistance and career-planning support. For Microsoft, it may reduce staffing costs while limiting some of the disruption associated with forced cuts. The trade-off is uncertainty: if too few employees accept, the company may still need other measures; if too many leave from critical areas, teams may face additional transition challenges.

Microsoft says it may consider another voluntary exit offer in the future if business and workforce needs justify it. That language leaves open the possibility that workforce adjustments will remain an ongoing part of the company’s operating strategy rather than a one-time event.
