Nvidia Reportedly Pursues $12.9B Acquisition of Hugging Face
Nvidia is reportedly pursuing an acquisition of Hugging Face valued at about $12.9 billion, according to a report from The Information cited by Ars Technica AI. CNBC has separately reported that people familiar with the matter confirmed talks are underway. The transaction has not been finalized, however, and the discussions could still end without a deal.
Why Hugging Face matters
Hugging Face is more than a download site for AI models. Its platform allows developers and researchers to discover, host, run, fine-tune, and redistribute models. In that sense, it occupies a role in the model ecosystem somewhat comparable to GitHub’s role in conventional software development. Open-weight models and their derivatives are routinely shared and tested there, making the platform an important piece of open AI infrastructure.
That strategic position helps explain why the reported valuation could matter even though Hugging Face is reportedly not yet profitable. The company has become a de facto meeting point for open models, attracting interest from chipmakers, cloud providers, and developer-tool companies. Salesforce was reportedly among the companies that had also sought to acquire it. Google and Microsoft have invested in Hugging Face previously, as has Nvidia.
What Nvidia could gain
- A tighter software-hardware link: Nvidia’s advantage has long rested on its GPUs and CUDA ecosystem. Owning a major model platform could bring model development and Nvidia hardware closer together.
- A new cloud-AI route: Nvidia previously had plans for its own cloud AI business but struggled to establish it. Hugging Face’s models and developer network could offer a more credible entry point.
- More influence over open models: Nvidia has publicly supported open-weight models and has released its own Nemotron family. Control of a key distribution and development platform would increase its influence in that market.
- A foothold in physical AI: Hugging Face has been expanding into models for robotics and other physical AI applications, areas where Nvidia is already a major player.
The broader industry signal
The talks come as the AI supply chain begins to fragment. Frontier labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic are investing in specialized hardware to reduce dependence on Nvidia and gain more control over training and inference. If Nvidia owns an important platform for open-model development and distribution, it could encourage developers and businesses to continue building around Nvidia hardware.
The acquisition would also create a trust challenge. Hugging Face’s value depends partly on its appeal across hardware vendors, frameworks, and research communities. If users view it as an extension of one chip company, some may question the platform’s neutrality. Nvidia would therefore need to do more than acquire a model repository: it would have to connect models, cloud services, developer tools, and chips without weakening the community that made Hugging Face strategically valuable in the first place. Until an official announcement arrives, the reported transaction should be treated as a possibility rather than a completed deal.
