Reddit’s Stock Drop Puts Google AI Overviews Under New Scrutiny

Reddit’s latest earnings report should have been a straightforward story about better-than-expected financial performance. Instead, the market focused on a more structural concern: what happens to a content platform when Google Search increasingly answers questions through AI-generated summaries rather than sending users to source pages? After the report, Reddit shares fell by more than 20 percent, and CEO Steve Huffman used the moment to challenge the value proposition of Google’s AI Overviews.

Key points

  • Reddit is positioning itself as an antidote to synthetic content. In his investor letter, Huffman argued that as the web fills with automated material, users are looking for real human perspective. Reddit, in his framing, is not valuable because it can be compressed into an answer box; it is valuable because of discussion, disagreement, context, and first-hand accounts.
  • Huffman says AI Overviews have not yet delivered a clear “win-win.” He contrasted the old model of “10 blue links,” which sent traffic across the web, with AI Overviews. From Reddit’s perspective, he said, the feature has not produced a comparable positive impact for publishers, retailers, platforms, and other web businesses.
  • Licensing relationships are under pressure. Reddit has a reported $60 million licensing deal with Google and also has a deal with OpenAI. According to the source material, Reddit may still be considering whether to end its Google licensing arrangement, while several major publishers are also said to be evaluating similar moves.
  • The traffic debate remains unresolved. A Pew Research study found that AI Overviews sharply reduced referrals compared with traditional search results. Google disputes that framing, saying the study’s methodology was flawed and that total organic click volume from Search to websites has remained relatively stable year over year.

Why it matters

The dispute is bigger than one company’s earnings call. For years, the open web operated on an implicit bargain: sites allowed search engines to crawl and index their pages because visibility in search results could produce traffic, revenue, subscriptions, and audience growth. AI summaries complicate that bargain. If the answer appears directly on the results page, users may have less reason to click through to the source.

Reddit sits at the center of this tension. Its archives are highly valuable to AI companies because they contain informal, human, experience-based discussion. At the same time, Reddit still depends on search referrals to bring users into those discussions. That makes the company both a supplier to the AI ecosystem and a platform potentially harmed by AI search interfaces.

Google’s challenge is also difficult. It wants to improve search with direct, synthesized answers, but it must preserve incentives for websites to keep producing the material those answers depend on. If publishers and platforms conclude that AI Overviews extract value without sending enough traffic back, the fight over crawling rules, licensing terms, citation design, and referral metrics will intensify.

For investors, the concern is practical: if search referrals are “choppy,” Reddit’s growth model may be more exposed to Google’s product decisions than its headline financials suggest. For the broader web, the question is even larger. Can AI search create a new value-sharing model in which users get faster answers, search engines improve their products, and original content sources still receive measurable benefits? Until that is proven, the promise of a “win-win” remains unsettled.
