Claude Adds Docs and Slides in a More Direct Challenge to Gemini

Anthropic is pushing Claude beyond the role of a conversational assistant and toward becoming a place where users can complete and deliver office work. The company has launched beta versions of Claude Docs and Slides, allowing people to create documents and presentations directly inside a Claude conversation. Once a file has been generated, users can ask Claude to revise it, make changes manually, export it, or share it with others.

Keeping more of the workflow in Claude

Before this update, a common Claude workflow involved generating text in a chat and then copying that material into a document editor or presentation tool. Docs and Slides are designed to keep more of that process inside the same product. A user can begin with an ordinary conversation, ask Claude to produce a document or a deck, and then continue refining the result without starting over in another application.

Anthropic describes Claude Docs as similar in some respects to an online collaborative document. New documents are private by default, but owners can invite other editors to work on them at the same time. Collaborators, including Claude, can leave comments presented in a style familiar to users of Google Docs. Anthropic also says that work created with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs is available through one shareable link that can be opened on a phone.

A single “one Claude” interface

The product launch is paired with a restructuring of how Claude’s capabilities are presented. Anthropic is merging regular chats and Cowork into a unified experience called “one Claude.” Artifacts and Claude Design will also be available through the same interface.

The goal is to reduce the need for users to decide which Claude mode fits a particular task. Instead, Claude is expected to determine what the task requires and make the relevant skills, context, and connectors available from the current conversation. For users, that promises a simpler entry point. For Anthropic, it turns a collection of separate AI features into a more continuous work surface.

A clearer contest with Gemini

Google Gemini already has a strong position in productivity software because it is embedded directly in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Google has expanded Gemini’s role in those products with an in-document chat experience, tools for generating and editing complete documents, and features for creating presentations. Claude has generally been used more like a standalone AI assistant, even when users relied on it for work.

Docs and Slides do not give Claude a complete office suite overnight, but they reduce the number of reasons to leave a Claude conversation. Users who have already built context, connector access, and working habits around Claude can now move from an instruction to a shareable deliverable with fewer copy-and-paste steps. That could matter particularly for drafting, planning, and presentation preparation, where the conversation and the final artifact are closely connected.

What remains uncertain

The new tools are launching in beta. Anthropic says the unified experience will first roll out over the next few weeks to Pro and Max subscribers on the web, desktop, and mobile apps. Team and Free users will receive access later. The company says there is nothing users need to turn on, and conventional Claude chats will remain available.

The more important test will be how Docs and Slides handle complex formatting, permissions, simultaneous editing, and connections to outside services. Anthropic’s announcement is therefore about more than adding two file types. It signals an attempt to turn Claude from a place that answers questions into a place that helps produce and deliver finished work. If the strategy continues, competition among AI assistants will depend not only on model quality, but also on which service can retain the largest share of a user’s complete workflow.
